As the weather heats up, it goes without saying you will probably spend more time outdoors. While this may be exciting on many fronts, it can also lead to a variety of health concerns.

What will you do this summer to protect your eyes? Many people focus so much time on shading their skin from the sun that they overlook protection for their eyes. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to make all the right decisions in the months to come:

1. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses. This one step is the best thing you can do to protect your eyes from the sun’s strong rays.

2. Wear a hat. It may not provide as much protection as sunglasses, but it can definitely help keep the sun out of your eyes.

3. The clouds aren’t your friend. Even though the sun may be hiding behind the clouds, it doesn’t mean that its rays are gone for the day. The sun’s rays have the power to pass through thin clouds, thus damaging your eyes and skin.

4. Don’t stare directly into the sun. Did you know that looking directly at the sun can lead to solar retinopathy? Don’t make it a habit of doing this.

With these tips on your side, you can enjoy the outdoors this summer without any concern regarding the safety of your eyes.

What other steps do you take to protect your eyes from the sun?

Many people associate dry skin with the winter months, hoping that this disappears once warmer weather arrives.

Unfortunately, the summer heat can cause just as many problems for your skin.

Here are five of the top reasons for dry skin in the summer months:

1. Lack of Water

It’s imperative to drink enough water during the summer, as neglecting to do so can have a negative impact on your skin as well as many other parts of your body.

2. Air Conditioning

There is no denying the fact that an air conditioned room feels good when it’s hot outside, but it can also dry out the skin.

3. Clogged Pores

Do you work outside all day long? Do you spend a lot of time in the sun after work? If so, you probably sweat quite a bit. When this happens, clogged pores can become a major problem. Subsequently, skin dryness sets in.

4. Over Exfoliation

While it may be a good idea to exfoliate your skin during the summer, overdoing it can lead to dryness. Do yourself a favor and don’t do this too often. It could come back to harm you.

5. Too Many Hot Showers

A hot shower may do you a lot of good in the winter, but it’s time to change your approach during the summer months. This can cause dehydration, thus drying out the skin.

If you suffer from dry skin during the summer, a natural skin care product or service may be all you need. Have you given this a thought?

As summer inches closer and the weather warms up, it won’t be long before you find yourself lounging in the pool. As fun as this may be, don’t overlook the many injuries that lurk.

Here are three of the most common swimming injuries:

1. Swimmer’s Shoulder

Generally speaking, this happens when you repetitively use incorrect technique as you swim. Soon enough, the motion can lead to both pain and inflammation, impacting you inside and out of the pool.

The best way to prevent this injury is to use proper technique at all times.

Note: if you injure your shoulder swimming, it can be treated with ice and anti-inflammatory medicine. Of course, you should also get plenty of rest.

2. Knee Injuries

Just the same as you use your arms to propel yourself through the water, your legs, including your knees, are just as important.

As you kick with your legs and rotate your knees, the inner parts have the potential of becoming inflamed. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain that will only go away with rest.

3. Dehydration

Just because you are in the water doesn’t mean you can’t become dehydrated. The more time you spend in the pool, especially if you are exercising, the greater chance there is of becoming dehydrated. Protect against this by taking regular water breaks.

Nobody wants to suffer one of these common swimming injuries. Not only are they painful, but they can keep you from enjoying other areas of your life, such as gardening.

As the weather warms up, it’s important to become familiar with a variety of summer injuries that could sneak up on you.

No matter how hard you try, you never know when a bee will come about and sting you. Ouch!

As painful as this may be, there are natural treatment options that can have you feeling better in no time.

Once the stinger has been removed and the wound cleaned, it’s time to experiment with one of the following treatment options:

1. Ice. After 20 to 30 minutes, the site of the sting will begin to feel better. Ice helps numb the skin, while also slowing blood flow to the area.

2. Honey. It sounds silly, being that bees produce honey, but it’s been proven effective. Just one small dab of honey can go a long way in relieving the pain associated with a bee sting.

3. Crushed garlic. All you have to do is crush a garlic clove, press the juices against the skin, and wait for the pain to go away. It may smell, but it’s effective.

4. Baking soda and vinegar. Mix the two, along with a little bit of water, to make a paste. Approximately 30 minutes after application you should begin to feel better. This is one of the best treatments for neutralizing the acid found in a bee sting.

5. Toothpaste. It’s not as crazy as it sounds, as toothpaste can help neutralize an acidic bee sting. Subsequently, the pain and swelling will be reduced, typically within a half hour.

If a bee stings you this summer, forget about running for the medicine cabinet. Instead, the kitchen may be your best option!

Summer is a time for having fun, spending time outdoors, and enjoying the warm weather. That is until you suffer an injury that you didn’t see coming. At that point, you find yourself on the mend and wondering what went wrong.

Here are some of the most common summer injuries that can sneak up on you:

1. Grilling injury. Every time you fire up your grill you need to be extremely careful. You could burn yourself at any time, thus landing you in the emergency room.

2. Lawn mowing injury. Cutting the grass can quickly turn dangerous, with more than 8,000 Americans injured every year in lawnmower accidents.

3. Heat rash. The more time you spend outdoors the greater chance there is that you will suffer from heat rash, especially when the weather is hot and humid. If your skin is itchy and red, with blisters setting in, it’s time to head for the AC.

Others to keep an eye on include:

·      Aching feet

·      Pulled muscles

·      Sunburn

·      Bug bites

·      Dehydration

Once you realize that these injuries are common, you can do your best to avoid them at all costs.

If there is ever anything we can do for you, such as scheduling a massage to work on a pulled muscle, feel free to reach out. We are here to assist!

With the warm weather finally here, the last thing you want to do is suffer an injury that keeps you inside for an extended period of time. For this reason, you must do whatever it takes to protect your back while working in the yard.

Here are some unique tips to prevent a back injury this spring:

·      Warm up before you get started. This can be as simple as taking a stroll around the block to get the blood flowing and loosen your muscles.

·      Keep proper posture. Do you find yourself hunched over when working in the yard? Try to avoid this at all costs. When you stand up straight, there is less chance of suffering an injury.

·      Use the right tools. Some garden tools are ergonomically correct while others are not. Don’t make the mistake of using old tools that could put you in a bad working position.

·      Wear a comfortable pair of shoes. Without these, your feet may begin to cause you trouble. As a result, the pain could eventually reach your back.

·      Take breaks. Although you want to get the job done as quickly as possible, taking a risk with your health is never a good idea. A few breaks here and there can do you a lot of good.

If these tips fail you for any reason, don’t hesitate to take a weekend off. Along with this, consider the best treatment strategies, such as a massage.

A muscle strain is not the most serious injury, but it can definitely keep you down and out for quite some time. This is particularly true if you don’t take the right approach towards healing.

Of course, no two muscle strains are the same. For example, a grade 1 strain is the least serious. With this, you can expect a full recovery within a couple of week.

A grade 2 strain is more damaging, however, the muscle is not completely ruptured. A healing period of three to six weeks is not uncommon.

Finally, a grade 3 strain is most serious. When you completely rupture a muscle, it can take as long as three months to completely heal. And that is only if you are treating the muscle in the appropriate manner.

There are many things you can do to speed up the healing process, including immediate treatment after the injury. This includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Along with the above, there may come a point when you want to consider a massage. This is not always the right choice, so make sure you contact us to discuss your injury and receive professional advice.

Without the proper treatment, a muscle strain can linger for quite some time. As a result, you won’t be able to workout on schedule. Fortunately, there are treatment options that can speed up the healing process.

While there is worse pain than a strained, pulled, or sore muscle, you know just how uncomfortable it can be. If you find yourself in this position, the only thing you care about is getting relief as soon as possible.

Heat therapy is one of the best ways to comfort a sore muscle. But before you get involved with this type of treatment, there are three things you need to know:

1. Heat therapy is used to open up blood vessels, which increases blood flow to reduce pain. Additionally, the heat can help decrease muscle spasms.

2. Heat can be applied in a variety of ways. A heat pad, for example, is one of the most common methods. If this does not work for you, it may be time to try a warm water bath.

Tip: no matter which method you rely on, don’t push the limit. If the heat is too warm, it could burn your skin.

3. Seek medical treatment if your injury does not improve. If your muscle does not improve in a reasonable period of time, don’t hesitate to seek professional medical treatment. There may be an underlying problem that requires medical attention.

Note: massage is another form of treatment known to provide a variety of health benefits.

Heat therapy may be just what you need in order to heal a sore muscle. One round of therapy could open your eyes as to just how powerful this treatment strategy can be.

Do you have any other tips for using heat to treat sore muscles?

With each passing day, we continue to inch towards warmer weather. Soon enough, you will be spending more time outdoors.

While the fresh air is sure to benefit you in many ways, there are some risks and health concerns to be aware of. Here are three outdoor dangers to protect against this spring:

1. Overheating. Some people don’t see this one coming, as they are focused on the task at hand (no matter what it may be). If you are feeling hot, sweating profusely, and dried out in an overall sense, it’s time to get out of the sun.

2. Stings and bites. Insects loves to feast on people as they attempt to enjoy the outdoors. In addition to long pants and long sleeves, you can protect yourself with a natural bug spray.

If you are bitten or stung, make sure you tend to it without delay. For example, a bee stinger should be removed immediately.

3. Rashes. When the temperature heats up and humidity rises, a red rash could set in. Soon enough, your skin will be red, bumpy, and itchy. This is anything but fun. If you run into this issue, a cool bath, without soap, can be the best remedy.

Don’t let these potential dangers scare you away from the outdoors this spring. Instead, be aware that these risks exist and then take the necessary steps to prevent trouble. It’s simple to do!

Now that spring is finally here, it won’t be long before the weather breaks and you can begin to spend more time outdoors.

While there is nothing wrong with spending time indoors, it’s important to note the many benefits associated with fresh air. As you spend more time outdoors, you may realize that your health is taking a turn for the better.

Here are three of the top benefits of fresh air:

·      Improves your heart rate and blood pressure. With a good supply of fresh air, as opposed to a polluted environment, your body does not have to work as hard. Instead, it gets all the oxygen it needs.

·      Improved digestion. Did you know that fresh air can help you digest food in a more effective manner? Don’t shy away from taking a nice outdoor walk after you eat. The fresh air will improve digestion, thus making you feel better.

·      A stronger immune system. As you know, white blood cells help fight bacteria and germs. These blood cells need enough oxygen to function at a high level. And there is no better way to get oxygen than to spend time in the fresh air.

There are many simple ways to improve your overall level of health. From a massage to getting more exercise to taking in fresh air, the right daily approach will improve your health and well being in no time at all.

Now that warm weather is finally moving into the area, it won’t be long before you are in your garden and enjoying the sun.

Unfortunately, things can take a turn for the worse if you are not careful. Did you know that thousands of people are injured in gardening accidents every year?

Here are three tips to ensure that you don’t become part of this statistic:

1. Don’t lift heavy items on your own. If you cannot comfortably lift an item, it is best to find somebody who can provide assistance. Neglecting to do so could lead to a variety of injuries, including a pulled back or neck muscle that could “lay you up” for quite some time.

2. Protect yourself from the sun. Although it may not be summer just yet, it doesn’t mean you can neglect to protect yourself from the sun. By taking the right approach, you never have to worry about this.

3. Know your limits in the heat. At some point, you may begin to wear down in the heat. Don’t let this happen to you. Instead, take breaks when needed and drink plenty of water. This will protect against dehydration and other injuries. You may feel like “pushing it” as a means of completing your project, but don’t shy away from taking a step back.

With these garden safety tips in mind, you will have a more enjoyable spring.

When it comes to skin care, there are many products and services that can work in your favor. However, it doesn’t matter what you do if you don’t protect yourself from the sun.

While most people understand the importance of doing so during the summer months, don’t overlook the fact that sun can wreak havoc on your skin at other times of the year (yes, even winter).

For the most complete sun protection, follow these three tips:

1. Rely heavily on a natural sun block. Not only will this protect your skin, but you don’t have to worry about it causing any harm upon application.

2. Shade is your friend. When the sun’s rays are strong, it’s time to seek shade. It may not always be possible to stay out of the sun, but if shade is to be had you should take full advantage.

3. Wear protective clothing. This is often the best way to protect your skin from the sun. For example, tightly woven pants can keep the sun off your legs. You won’t have anything to worry about in this scenario, as your clothes provide a layer of protection between your skin and the sun.

Some sun can be good for you. Too much, however, can cause harm.

The sun is not the enemy and we do not want to hide from the sun. I caution against the use of a moisturizer with a built in sunblock. First of all,
the active sunblock ingredients are most likely chemical based sunblocks. These get absorbed into the skin and into the blood stream. One of these
main ingredients is usually, Oxybenzene. This is a known endocrine disruptor. It is a synthetic estrogen that gets absorbed into the
bloodstream and disrupts the normal function of the endocrine system.

Besides that major issue, the problem I have with moisturizer/sunblock combo is that you put it on in the morning and think that you are covered
through out the day. However, this is not actually the case. Your bodies natural oils and sweat and florescent lighting break down the active
ingredients and you are not protected when you most need it. You make choices based the notion that you are protected and that is a false
assumption. So you spend more time in the sun, unprotected.

Then to top it off, you exposed yourself to the chemicals in them for no reason. A better option is to opt for a zinc oxide based sunblock when you need it.
Rely on shade, hats, protective clothing and be smart about being in the sun. I do not recommend using Zinc based products that have been altered through nanotechnology. This process blasts the zinc particles to make them much smaller and allow them to be rubbed into the skin and not be
visible. There are many potential issues with nanoparticles in the body.

With the winter season coming to an end, it’s time to turn your attention towards the spring months.

As the weather changes, there is no better time to improve your health. You will feel more inclined than ever to make big changes, so you might as well take advantage of this motivation.

Here are three ways to improve your health in the next few months:

1. Exercise more often. It doesn’t matter if you do so at the gym or home, make sure you work this into your regular routine. Not only will it transform your body, but it will do wonders for your mental state as well.

2. Watch what you eat. This doesn’t mean you have to go on a traditional diet. It does mean you should watch what you are putting into your body. Doing so could help you lose weight and feel better.

3. Get a regular massage. There are many benefits of massage. From increased circulation to decreased stress, a massage can transform your mind, body, and soul.

The spring months are all about rebirth and change. Are you going to take this time to improve your health? The opportunity is out there. All you have to do is create and implement a plan. From there, the results will roll in!

Can you think of anything better than a good workout? This has a way of making you feel better, both physically and mentally.

If you don’t know how to prepare for your workout, there is a good chance you could make a mistake that sets you back. And that is not something you want to do.

Here are three big mistakes to avoid before working out:

1. Forgetting to stretch. Neglecting to do this can cause you a lot of trouble, including pulled muscles that could put you on the shelf for a few weeks or longer.

It only takes a solid 10 to 15 minutes to get a good stretch, so make sure you take the time to do so.

2. Eating too much. You don’t want to be starving as you head into a workout. At the same time, you shouldn’t feed your face and then show up at the gym a few minutes later. This will make you lethargic. It may even make you sick as you begin to build up a sweat.

3. Neglecting to stay hydrated. Many people understand the importance of remaining hydrated while they workout. But remember this: you should hydrate before you begin to sweat. This helps reduce the risk of dehydration.

If you avoid these mistakes before working out, you will feel much better as you move through your regimen.

Can you think of anything else you shouldn’t do before hitting the gym?

Poor blood flow can lead to a variety of problems, including but not limited to a tingling sensation in your extremities.

By increasing blood flow, your overall level of health will get a boost. But here is the big question: what is the best way of doing so?

Here are three top tips for promoting better blood flow:

1. Get physical. Are you the type who hides from physical activity? Don’t do this any longer. Instead, take the time to implement a physical fitness plan you are comfortable with.

This can include anything from walking to jogging to lifting weights.

2. Stretch often. You should stretch first thing in the morning and last thing before retiring for the evening. Along with this, take breaks throughout the day to stretch your muscles. This has been proven to increase blood flow.

3. Elevate your legs. For many, poor blood flow is a major problem in their lower legs. If this is a concern for you, keep your legs elevated while resting.

Final tip: a massage can increase blood flow to many parts of your body, while also relieving you of stress.

It is important to promote better blood flow, as this can have a positive impact on your health. If you decide that a massage could do you good, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We would love to help you in whatever way we can.

A pulled neck muscle is not the worst injury you can suffer, but it’s one that can cause quite a bit of pain and discomfort over a short period of time (longer if not treated).

Are you unsure of whether or not you have pulled a neck muscle? Is it possible you could be suffering from some other type of injury?

Here are several of the most common symptoms associated with a neck muscle strain:

·      Tenderness to the touch or when you make slight movements.

·      Decreased range of motion.

·      Tightness in the neck.

·      High level of pain, especially when you move.

·      Headache at the base of the skull, often radiating towards the forehead.

Along with the above, you may find it difficult to stay seated or standing for an extended period of time. Instead, the pain is best dealt with when you are lying down and in position to rest your head.

Now that you understand the symptoms of a pulled neck muscle, it’s time to learn more about your treatment options.

First and foremost, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice if your symptoms are severe. Along with this, make sure you get plenty of rest.

Last, but certainly not least, a massage is one of the best ways to regain range of motion and treat some of the most painful symptoms.

All injuries can be painful and bothersome, however, some have a greater chance of impacting your life. One such injury is a tight hamstring. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it has a way of holding you down for quite some time.

It is important to know what is causing this problem, as well as the many ways it can be treated. Here are three of the top reasons for tight hamstrings:

·      Previous hamstring strain. Did you recently injure your hamstring? Is it possible it is not 100 percent healed? If so, there is a good chance that you will continue to deal with tightness for the time being.

·      Hamstring injury. It goes without saying that you could be experiencing tightness due to a current injury, such as a strain or tendinosis. If you don’t tackle your current injury, it could continue to cause you pain and discomfort into the future.

·      Lack of stretching. Before a workout, for example, your hamstrings may feel tight. If you don’t stretch, this problem could persist throughout your workout and eventually lead to a serious injury.

If you are suffering from tight hamstrings, if you have an injury you just can’t seem to heal, it’s time to consider all your treatment options. This includes a massage. Sometimes, all it takes is a professional massage to loosen your hamstrings and help heal any injury you may be dealing with.

When the snow hits, it means one thing to many people: time to grab the shovel and venture into the cold.

Regardless of how much snow you need to move, nothing will change the fact that there are things you can do to improve your safety.

Here are five tips for avoiding snow shoveling injuries:

·      Use the right equipment. From an ergonomic shovel to a snow blower, there is help to be had.

·      Wear comfortable shoes with good traction. Enough said!

·      Take breaks when needed. You want to get the job done, but don’t do so at the expense of your health. There is nothing wrong with taking a break every now and again, especially on big jobs.

·      Push the snow, don’t lift it. This will go a long way in preventing back injuries.

·      Dress the part. If there is snow on the ground chances are that the temperature is below freezing. Make sure you are dressed appropriately. This includes multiple layers, gloves, and a hat that covers your ears.

A snow shoveling injury can cause quite a bit of pain and discomfort. By following these five tips, you can avoid injuries that will put you “on the shelf” for several days or longer.

Final tip: if you happen to pull a muscle while shoveling snow, a massage may be the treatment you need to get back on your feet.

Last week, we discussed some of the best ways to keep your pet safe during the winter months. This time around we are going to focus on what you can do to protect your children when the temperature plunges:

1. Dress them in layers. Several lays of clothing can go a long way in keeping your child warm. From their head down to their feet, layers are a must.

2. Don’t assume. Just because you dressed your child in warm clothing doesn’t mean he or she can remain outdoors for hours on end. Be sure to check on them often, while also letting them know to seek shelter if it gets too cold.

3. Use sunscreen. Believe it or not, sunburn can happen in the winter. For this reason, any exposed skin should be covered with sunscreen.

4. Keep them hydrated. You can’t get dehydrated in cold weather, right? Wrong! Cold weather and layers of clothes can speed up the dehydration process. From water to hot cocoa, make sure your children stay hydrated.

5. Keep them inside when under the weather. If your child is under the weather, such as fighting a cold, keep him or her inside for the time being. A minor issue could get much worse by spending time outdoors.

The winter cold is here. Do you have any other tips for keeping young children safe? Share your advice and guidance in the comment section. You never know when you could help somebody else!

With winter weather moving in, it is important to take care of yourself as well as your pets. While your four-legged friend may seem happy most the time, it only takes one mistake to end up at the vet’s office.

Here are five top winter pet care tips for the upcoming months:

·      Outside time should be limited. Even if your pet spends most of the year outdoors, this is not a good idea when temperatures begin to fall.

·      Provide outdoor shelter. If you plan on letting your pet spend any extended time outdoors, provide the necessary shelter at all times. This can go a long way in ensuring that scruffy has somewhere to hang out if the weather gets too cold.

·      Keep an eye on your pet’s diet. When your pet spends more time indoors, it consumes less energy. As a result, you need to adjust its diet accordingly. If you don’t, you may find your pet overweight when the weather finally breaks.

·      Keep pets out of the garage. You may realize that drinking that fluid leaking from your car is a bad idea. Your pet, however, has no idea. It won’t take your pet long to find a spill. Protect against this by keeping your pet out of the garage.

·      Salt can be harmful. If you plan on throwing salt down to melt snow and ice, make sure it is pet friendly.

The winter weather is here, meaning that you need to take special care of yourself and your pets. Do you know what this means?
